Reduce lactic acid bacteria spoilage

3M has launched an all-in-one solution for efficient and easy monitoring of lactic acid bacteria in both products and manufacturing environments.

The new 3M Petrifilm Lactic Acid Bacteria Count Plate offers all the benefits of the Petrifilm count plate range, while eliminating the complexity and need for costly anaerobic equipment associated with traditional methods.

It combines oxygen-scavenging technology and oxygen-barrier films to create a self-contained anaerobic environment. Food processors and testing laboratories can now achieve accurate anaerobic results using aerobic incubation conditions, providing enhanced recovery of lactic acid bacteria within 48 hours. If results indicate unacceptable levels of the bacteria, the processing and cleaning conditions can quickly be adjusted to avoid product spoilage.

“Food manufacturers are becoming more aware of the impact lactic acid bacteria plays on their products’ quality and shelf life,” says John David, 3M’s food safety global marketing manager. “The improved and easier testing process made possible by the Petrifilm Lactic Acid Bacteria count plate will enable them to more effectively monitor this group of microorganisms and make confident decisions, helping to increase productivity, while protecting brand reputation.”

In contrast with traditional methods, this technology can be used to test a wide range of foods and environmental surfaces – from meat, fish, poultry and dairy processors to manufacturers of processed foods, including dressings and sauces.
