Fowler Welch teams up with FareShare to reduce food waste

Fowler Welch has teamed up with food redistribution charity FareShare to enable more surplus food to be used to provide healthy meals for vulnerable people across the UK.

The initial trial will see the supply chain specialist collect surplus stock from food businesses, to which it delivers, along the south coast. It will be taken to one of FareShare’s 20 regional centres across the UK to be redistributed to local charities and community groups to provide nutritious meals to vulnerable people.

Pie, quiche and sausage roll maker Higgidy has already signed up to the scheme that offers it a simple, effective and cost-free way to put surplus food to use and make a real difference to both the local and wider communities.

Nick Hay, CEO of Fowler Welch, says, “No matter how efficient your business, food waste occurs for a range of reasons. Many companies are eager to help make a difference but simply don’t know where to begin, so we are using our logistical expertise to help solve this problem.

“By offering our logistics services to the FareShare scheme, we are offering businesses a way to help some of the 8.4 million people in the UK struggling to afford a meal. Collections will happen at the same time as their usual service and surplus food that would otherwise go to waste will be taken to provide a lifeline for disadvantaged people on their doorstep.”

FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell adds, “Fowler Welch’s role in our redistribution campaign simplifies the process for donors and will hopefully encourage more businesses across the region to sign up to help their local community and add to the 18.3 million meals we’ve provided so far to those that need them.”
