Bells Group unveils £500,000 cakes expansion

Bells Food Group is to invest £500,000 in a new cake bakery after acquiring a 4,500 sq ft former council depot next to its Dykehead Bakery in Scotland.

The expansion in Shotts, which will create an additional 10 permanent jobs once it is fully operational in around 15 months, will see cake manufacturing move into the new facility, while the existing Dykehead Bakery will focus solely on pastry manufacturing.

The Bells range of cakes and dumplings includes Kirriemuir Gingerbread.

The announcement follows Bells Food Group’s £3.6 million investment in doubling its pastry production capacity at Dykehead and the creation of Bells Professional Pastry, a dedicated arm of the business focused on the manufacture and supply of pastry. Last month, the business launched a new savoury Bake range.

Ronnie Miles, managing director of Bells Food Group, says, “The investment in a dedicated cake bakery is the latest in a programme of capital expenditure and new product development across our sweet, savoury and pastry businesses.

“Subject to the scope of redevelopment work required, we hope to have it fully operational by Christmas 2018.”

A planning application to support the redevelopment of the former Council depot into a dedicated cake bakery is likely to be submitted in spring 2018.
