2017/2018

We’re into the final push of 2017 here at Bell HQ, with the December 2017/January 2018 issue of Food & Drink Technology currently being finalised.

The last issue of the year always provides a chance for reflection, and it seems a lot of this year has been spent working towards announcements made in 2016.

Brexit, of course, continues to make headlines, with negotiations ready to proceed to stage two. The food and drink industry has been calling for reassurance on its valued EU workforce, frictionless trade across borders and details of a sensible transition period, among other things, so we will continue to monitor the progress of negotiations.

Another 2016 announcement, the soft drinks industry levy, has also seen progress this year, with many manufacturers working to lower the amount of sugar in their drinks ahead of the levy coming into force in April 2018.

Next year also sees the publication of Public Health England evidence on children’s calorie consumption, in order to set the ambition for the calorie reduction programme to remove excess calories from the foods children consume the most. Expected in early 2018, the publication of evidence will be followed by consultation with the food industry, trade bodies and health non governmental organisations to develop guidance and timelines for the calorie reduction programme.

As always, Food & Drink Technology will keep you up-to-date with the latest developments, so keep an eye on our website, Twitter and LinkedIn pages for updates.

For now, I’d like to wish all of our readers a very merry Christmas.
