Challenges and opportunities

It’s official – Carly has left the building (packed off with an array of baby gifts and our very best wishes.)

That means, after a five-year absence, I’m sliding back into the hot seat and will be holding the fort for the next few months.

Much has changed in the industry since I was last at the helm of Food & Drink Technology – the most significant, of course, being Britain’s vote to leave the EU.

Negotiations with regards to the future regulatory landscape post-Brexit continue to progress, but while the food and drink manufacturing sector is being urged not to disengage with the EU marketplace in the run-up to our departure (thus potentially allowing competitors to get a foot in the door!) there is still much confusion as to what the future holds. However, the one thing we do know is that during the implementation period (up to 31 December 2020) market access will continue on current terms.

The really good news, though, is that the industry is speaking with one (rather loud) voice during the negotiations in a bid to protect UK food security, and deliver the jobs and support necessary to ensure continued growth.

The next few months will be defining for food and drink firms but Britain’s biggest manufacturing sector is nothing if not resilient, and quick to respond to existing and evolving challenges. And surely challenges can also bring opportunities…

Let’s wait and see.
