NUTRA NEWS: Plant-based Omega 3

Nutritionists agree that Omega-3 essential fatty acids are needed in diet because our bodies can’t make it. The popular source is fish oil, but concerns raised about toxins contaminating the fish and sustainability of fish stocks have led to a desperate race for an alternative plant-based product that has both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

A Swiss-based company has beaten off the competition by looking at the seabed of the food chain and has launched a product called Algae Pure extracted from a secret strain of algae.
Tom Brudnell-Bruce, the entrepreneur behind this new discovery, says,“I feel privileged that whilst working on a range of seaweed and algal products we discovered a secret, state-of-the-art technology that provides a credible, organic and environmentally sustainable alternative to using potentially toxic, endangered fish stocks.
Foods For Life nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says,“This algae-based alternative to fish is groundbreaking. Nutritionists struggle to agree on the optimum ratio of DHA to EPA, but most agree you shouldn’t really have one without the other.
“Previously, only algal DHA was available and even then difficult to get hold of. The fact nutritionists can now recommend an EPA and DHA product which is sustainably sourced and pure plant-based is a huge leap forward for the health of everyone. For vegetarians and vegans, and for groups who avoid animal products for ethical reasons this is a major breakthrough.
