Fizzing with pride

Was honoured to be a guest at the official opening of the fourth UK Coca-Cola Education Centre in Sidcup, Kent, this week.
The myth-busting project is designed to give pupils a real insight into modern day manufacturing, on the basis that a better understanding of the processes involved in food and drink manufacture will encourage them into the industry.
And, boy, do we need that!
We may be the biggest manufacturing industry in the UK – and by some miles – but, sadly, the skills shortage does little to reflect that. So good on Coca-Cola for doing its bit to bridge the gap between school and the world of work.
Sure, it’s not purely altruistic – “It’s also about bringing young talent to our organisation,” admits Steve Adams, operations director of Coca-Cola Enterprises – but by Coca-Cola admitting that its prosperity is directly linked to the prosperity of the communities that surround its manufacturing bases, the drinks giant has proved that it has so much more to offer than just its globally recognised brands.
