Getting Ratty

Date: 17/06/2010

I know it’s been a few days since my last blog, but it has taken me the best part of a week to recover from the first England game (for those wondering why I was not sipping green tea from a china mug, as opposed to glugging Pimm’s straight from the bottle for the whole 90 minutes, I must confess that the diet has now been suspended for the duration of the World Cup) which happened to kick off just 24 hours after Campden Day.

Oh, what fun it was in the Cotswolds. The event took a slightly different format this year, as instead of a sit-down meal, there was a stand-up buffet. And it worked brilliantly, as I bagged myself top spot in the middle of the marquee from which to observe all the other attendees. Editorial board member Richard Ratcliffe was the first to happen by, and promptly proved that I have indeed trained him well by thrusting a glass of wine into my sweaty paw.

Now the fact that you’re reading this means there’s a fair chance you know the aforementioned Mr Ratcliffe (or Ratty to his friends.) In fact, I don’t think there was anyone there who didn’t know him. As a result, we spent the afternoon entertaining the industry bigwigs (with the exception of Julian and Steven, so apologies for that, you two – I just ran out of time!) But their loss was Jon Poole’s (IFST) gain. He was mightily miffed that I didn’t come to his rescue earlier despite him shooting ‘please rescue me’-type glances from across the other side of the marquee, while having his ear bent by a clearly less than entertaining visitor… But having eventually extricated himself, he made his way over to our huddle and consoled himself with a large glass of red. And there he stayed, glass (after glass) in hand, until being carted off in a taxi to the station. But I’m pleased to report that we were able to regroup on the train where, over another glass of wine, Jon was duly appointed as the newest member of our editorial board. Welcome, Jon. Oh, and big congratulations to fellow board member Denbigh Lloyd on the birth of your little boy. He’s gorgeous!
