Let me spell it out... I'm off on holiday!

Date: 18/08/2010

If acronyms were to be permissible in a game of Scrabble, fans of the word game working in the food industry would be guaranteed a headstart. For instance, in the next few weeks we have the IUFoST (world congress), IPA, SIAL and HiE to look forward to. Pick up the letters IFT, IFE and PPMA, and there’s another three industry events. But is life really so pressured that we have to speak in letters as opposed to words? Sadly, the answer, it seems, is yes. Take the BCCC (Biscuit, Cake, Chocolate and Confectionery group) for example. There was I happily calling it the ‘B-C-C-C’, when it was cheerfully pointed out to me that I could – and should – shorten it still further. Silly me for not realising that it is, in fact, the ‘B-triple-C’ (call me picky, but I make that the same number of syllables as ‘B-C-C-C’) Anyway, just because I have an aversion to acronyms, it doesn’t mean I don’t value my friends who work at the FDF, FSA and IFST (et al). So when I return from my long-awaited hols, I shall be arranging to see you all – if only to show off my tan and make sure I’m on your Christmas card list (OMG – there’s another one – can’t believe I just mentioned the C-word!) So TTFN (sorry, couldn’t resist) and I look forward to catching up with you all when I get back.

LOL! How right you are IMO. From my POV, i seem to be surrounded by acronyms, too- and must admit i am guilty of creating a couple of internal ones at work! Who would have thought that the explosion of social media and instant messaging would bring us full circle to squeezing information into small spaces as though we are all lonely hearts! Best to keep a GSOH about it all, i think! Athletic male, North London. :-)
