Olympic effort

Date: 27/07/2011

I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the new Olympic stadium last week thanks to the fabulous views afforded by smoked salmon firm Forman’s from its smokery on the appropriately named Fish Island.

I was there for the official launch of Coca-Cola’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report presented, rather quaintly, sans PowerPoint. (Very liberating).

In a nutshell, the global drinks giant is on a continued mission to improve both the health of the planet, and the lives of those living on it.

To this end, it unveiled some impressive stats – from the fact that last year 99.9% of its own manufacturing waste was recycled, to the news that it’s continuing its mission to install doors on 4.460 open fronted refrigerator units in retail outlets across the UK in order to improve energy efficiency.

“We haven’t got all the answers,” admits Simon Baldry, managing director of Coca-Cola Enterprises. “It’s a long road and there will always be more to do.”

But as Coca-Cola prepares to unleash its new biogas trucks on that long road, surely no one can accuse it of not giving its very best shot.
