The extra mile

Date: 17/10/2011

‘People are our weakest link – but also the most important,’ observes Leatherhead’s food security and crisis management expert Tony Hines, in this month’s issue of the magazine.

He’s referring to various examples of migrant workers found toiling in unacceptable conditions. But, as he rightly says, throughout the food chain – be it ingredient suppliers, manufacturers or retailers – people are essential.

And how easy it is to lose sight of that. In these tough economic times, most people are working harder than ever and frequently doing the work of at least two people – and often with little or no thanks.

So it was heartening to hear from my friends in the Food & Drink Federation press office how, in the summer months, they can start work an hour earlier in order to leave an hour earlier – and therefore make the most of the sunshine. A simple gesture, yet one which is greatly appreciated by staff.

And that set me thinking...

My grand idea? To compile a list of the top 10 employers in the food and drink manufacturing industry, as voted by you, with the results to be published in a future issue of Food & Drink Technology.

So if you know of or work for a company that goes the extra mile, please drop me a line at michelle@bellpublishing.com by November 30.
