UK storms into thirst place

Date: 13/01/2011

Have just returned from a press conference organised by Vinexpo, where the trade show organisers unveiled the results of research into the future of the world wine and spirits markets to 2014.

Interestingly, figures revealed that the UK has now overtaken France for consumer spending on wine. What’s more, wine drinkers in the UK are starting to trade up to more expensive wines costing more than £6 a bottle (making it the second largest market in the world for wines at that price after the USA).

I feel it important to point out, however, that despite my hitherto legendary wine consumption (it’s dry January, remember) I refuse to be held solely accountable for that incredible first statistic (although I will happily share the blame with the rest of Bell Publishing).

Secondly, I can say without doubt that I’m not marching with the growing army of wine-drinkers splashing out more than £6 a bottle. I’m a famously cheap date – and intend staying that way!
