Brits spend over £20k on bottled water in their lifetime

British consumers will spend an average of £20,956 on bottled water in their lifetime, according to new research.

The study was carried out by the team at www.vouchercodespro.co.uk, a money saving website in the UK. Respondents were initially asked to consider their bottled water consumption and estimate roughly how many bottles of water they purchase a week, with the average answer emerging as seven. The average cost of seven bottles of water emerged as £6.50. From this, researchers estimated how much an average Brit will spend on water in their lifetime, from the ages of 18-80, with the answer being £20,956.

To find out more about how much Britons were spending on other types of drinks, respondents were given a list of beverages and asked to provide how much they spent on each one every week on average. The following were the top five results after the overall averages were calculated:

  • Alcohol – £27.80
  • Coffee – £15.50
  • Water – £6.50
  • Fizzy drinks – £4.40
  • Juice – £3.30.

It was found that those in London spend the most on coffee every week, with respondents from this area admitting they spend around £35.80 on the beverage. Those in the South West spend the most on bottled water, with the average resident shelling out £10.20.

Researchers then asked respondents why it was they brought coffee or water from the shops, with the majority – 86% – stating they do so for convenience and the rest – 14% – answering that the taste is the main driver.

The survey polled a total of 2,176 UK based adults, all of whom were aged 21 and over. The selected respondents were spread across all regions of the UK.
