Minister praises ‘great innovation’ in frozen food

The UK frozen food industry has been praised for its innovation at a parliamentary launch of the Frozen Food Report II.

The event formed part of an ongoing campaign by the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) to muster support and recognition for frozen food’s role in reducing waste, providing affordable nutrition, aiding food security in the UK and supporting the foodservice industry.

The report, which gathers together independent evidence supporting the role of frozen food, was launched earlier this year to highlight the growth of the industry in recent years and the potential for frozen food in the face of changing consumption habits and demands.

Speaking at the event, minister of state for farming, food and fisheries, George Eustice (pictured), said the frozen food sector has “shown remarkable growth in the last five years”, praised the industry’s innovation in areas such as technology and labelling and highlighted that frozen food plays an important role in resolving issues such as reducing waste.

He added that negotiations around Brexit offer a wealth of opportunity for frozen food in terms of reviewing farming and production policies, as well as potentially accessing wider export markets and trade agreements further afield – ideal for frozen food where, given the correct storage, perishability is not an issue.
