Karma Bites storms the snacks aisle

New healthy brand Karma Bites has launched a product range hoped to rival popular snacks such as protein balls and popcorn.

Available in four different flavours: wasabi, Himalayan pink salt, peri peri and caramel, the range is gluten-free, low GI, free from artificial colours and suitable for vegans, according to the brand.

It is made from popped lotus seeds, which come from lotus flowers traditionally grown in Eastern Asia. Known for their high protein, low fat and rich mineral content, the seeds are valued for their nutritional and healing properties in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

Cassandra Barns, nutritionist, comments, “Lotus seeds contain more protein and less carbohydrates and less carbohydrate than similar snacks such as popcorn. This means they could be better at filling you up for the same amount of calories and better for supporting your blood sugar levels.

“Lotus seeds also provide a good source of a variety of vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, which plays an essential role in energy and supporting our muscles. The seeds are also rich in phytochemicals with antioxidant activity, which can help protect us against disease and have anti-ageing activity.”

The Karma Bites products are available to buy online. Each 30g bag contains 120/126 calories; RRP: £1.59.
