Confectionery catch up

The UK confectionery market has seen some big announcements in the last week – from the changing shape of Maltesers to the launch of a world first from Nestlé.

Rumours that confectionery favourite Maltesers would be undergoing a dramatic shape change from round to flat left fans panicking about the future of their beloved chocolate. Manufacturer Mars, however, has since reassured consumers that it has no intention to change its shape.

A spokesman said, “We are not planning to change the shape of the much-loved original Maltesers, however we are continually looking at ways to extend the brand, creating new ways for our customers to enjoy Maltesers.”

So the round shape stays, but we’ll keep an eye on updates from Mars on what these ‘ways to extend the brand’ may include.

As for Nestlé’s news, the manufacturer has unveiled the first chocolate bar to use its sugar reduction breakthrough, which was announced at the end of 2016.

Thanks to the technique, Milkybar Wowsomes, which contain milk as the number one ingredient in addition to crispy oat cereal pieces, boast 30% less sugar than similar chocolate products, with no artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colours or flavourings.

Available in the coming weeks, the range features products in various sizes, with the largest being 18g and containing 95 calories.

Nestlé’s move to make milk the number one ingredient in the Milkybar recipe last year was a welcome one, and this latest announcement now gives fans a reduced sugar alternative – we look forward to trying them.
