Environmental achievements for seafood and drinks

Two food and drink manufacturers have made it through to this year’s finals of the prestigious Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Environmental Leadership Awards.

The nominations, demonstrating the sector’s continually improving performance in the area, are for Young’s Seafood and Innocent Drinks.
Young’s Seafood entry is its ‘Fish for Life’ project, which is dedicated to the preservation of food fisheries. The BCE judges were impressed by the way in which Young’s is using its influence to drive positive influence right through the seafood supply chain from boatowners, right the way through to the consumer.
Innocent Drinks was nominated for its work in recycled packaging. In September 2007 the company launched the world’s first 100% post consumer recycled bottle. Originally only used for four products in the range, the company has now adopted the new bottles for the entire range.
With 55% less embedded CO2 than the equivalent original bottle, the ultimate savings will be around 1,000 tonnes of carbon per year.
Jessica Sansom, sustainability manager at Innocent says,“This move to 100% recycled content is extremely exciting. We created this special label as we really want to make everyone aware of the benefits that moving to recycled bottles had for us and encourage everyone to take a look at what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint.
