Relaunched app aids FIR

Fairway Foodservice is helping wholesalers and caterers meet impending changes to legislation on food labelling and information to customers by relaunching its food information for consumers (FIC) app.

The Erudus One program, a detailed product specification database, allows Fairway members and their customers to view a comprehensive range of information on more than 9,500 products. The redeveloped app features a streamlined new look and has been built with greater usability in mind, allowing improved access from any computer, tablet or smartphone.

The redesign has been introduced ahead of new food information regulations by the European Union (Regulation EU No 1169/2011). From 13 December, food manufacturers and caterers will be required to display or have available an increased range of information about their food, including mandatory nutrition labelling and an indication of allergens in the ingredient list.

Chris Binge, chief executive of Fairway Foodservice, says, “The new look Erudus One system will make it easier than ever for our members and their customers to access the information they need to meet the new EU legislation.

“While the new legislation will help the general public gain a better understanding of the content of food they eat, it’ll be a challenge for businesses throughout the foodservice industry to meet the new requirements. The regulations will have a particularly significant impact on the service caterers provide, and we believe that Erudus One will help make their lives much easier once the changes come into play.”

Erudus One was originally designed by Fairway Foodservice in 2007, and is now used by 37 wholesalers across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. The app provides comprehensive nutritional information, dietary advice and allergen information. Food manufacturers directly feed data on their products into the system, which is updated by Fairway Foodservice monthly.
