Safe and sound

The September issue of Food & Drink Technology is due to hit desks this week and as we have super-sized the issue this month, I apologise if it makes a dent in your desk when it lands!

The first of some major shows coming up throughout autumn are upon us, so we’ve included comprehensive previews of both PPMA and SIAL to give you the lowdown on who’s who and what’s what at the shows to help you plan your visits effectively.

We’ve also upped our coverage of ingredients, equipment and packaging news in this issue to allow for greater insight into the latest developments and new releases in the industry, including Sensient’s new collection of peach flavours for beverage applications, Standard-Knapp’s new pick-n-place tandem case packer and a new solution from Essentra Packaging which aids recloseability of bagged snacks.

In addition to features on fish and seafood, digital labelling and colours and flavours, food safety pops up a few times in this issue. The recent chicken scandal in the UK – coupled with the widely reported European horsemeat scandal – has had serious repercussions for the food industry. Responding to this, Nick Miller, head of FMCG at Crimson & Co, discusses the essential elements for an effective supply chain. In addition, Sidel’s Sid Johari explores the role of PET packaging in protecting the safety of the world’s food and beverages. And, sticking with the safety theme, Shaun Evers from Stonegate considers safety in sub-zero temperatures whilst Campden BRI explores food safety and quality management systems. Finally, Caobisco’s sustainability and CSR manager Paula Byrne describes what is being done to eliminate the worst forms of child labour during hazelnut harvesting in Turkey.

Stay safe!
