UFlex Limited has secured a 20‑year Indian patent for a new reclosable flexible packaging format engineered specifically for large‑format bags, a development aimed at food, nutrition, pet care and industrial sectors where packs are opened and resealed repeatedly.
Designed for repeated use
The patented solution addresses a long‑standing challenge in bulk packaging: maintaining product integrity from first opening through weeks of repeated consumer use. Large bags of pet food, coffee, protein supplements or flour often require strong barrier protection against moisture, oxygen and contaminants, while also giving retailers and consumers confidence that the pack has not been tampered with before purchase.
Integrated protection and security
Unlike conventional zipper‑based flexible packs, UFlex’s design incorporates secure reclosure, tamper‑evidence and enhanced barrier performance in a single structure.
A specially engineered thin protective layer sits beneath the zipper assembly. Even if the zipper is opened, the contents cannot be accessed without tearing this layer, providing a clear visual indication of tampering. Once the pack is opened legitimately, the zipper enables secure reclosure, and the integrated barrier structure continues to protect the remaining contents throughout their lifecycle.
Market impact and brand assurance
The company highlights that the solution is particularly relevant for products vulnerable to tampering, substitution and counterfeiting. By combining multiple protective functions, the packaging helps safeguard product authenticity and preserve brand reputation.
The barrier properties can also be tailored to suit different product categories, making the design suitable for food, pharmaceutical, chemical and industrial applications without requiring additional sealing mechanisms.
Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, president – flexible packaging and new product development, said packaging for large‑format products must now do far more than contain contents. It must protect product integrity, reassure consumers that the pack is secure before purchase, and maintain protection through repeated use. He noted that the patented solution delivers all three, offering brand owners a practical and cost‑effective way to strengthen consumer confidence.
