Mars, Incorporated is celebrating a landmark 115 years since founder Frank C. Mars began selling buttercream candies from his home kitchen in Tacoma, Washington — a modest beginning that has grown into one of the world’s most recognisable, family-owned businesses.

What started as a one‑man confectionery venture in 1911 has evolved into a diversified global enterprise generating more than $65 billion in annual revenue and employing approximately 170,000 Associates across 3,600 sites. Today, Mars’ portfolio spans more than 130 brands in pet food, veterinary care, science and diagnostics, snacking and food and nutrition, touching the lives of people and pets in more than 80 countries.

“Our 115-year history reflects the enduring power of our values and the long-term perspective that comes with being family-owned,” said Poul Weihrauch, CEO of Mars, Incorporated. “For generations, Mars has grown by evolving with the needs of people and pets while staying true to the principles that define who we are. As we look ahead, we remain focused on helping to create a better world for people, pets and the planet.”

A legacy built on principles

The company’s long-term philosophy is rooted in the Mars Five Principles — Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom — codified in 1980 but originating decades earlier. In the 1940s, Forrest Mars, Sr. articulated the company’s objective: to create a mutuality of benefits for consumers, suppliers, communities and Associates.

These principles continue to guide Mars’ approach to growth, sustainability and innovation, shaping decisions from product development to community investment and environmental stewardship.

Evolving with consumers and pet owners

Mars’ evolution reflects shifting consumer expectations and the expanding role of pets in households worldwide. From iconic brands such as M&M’S®, BEN’S ORIGINAL, EXTRA, PEDIGREE and ROYAL CANIN, to cutting-edge veterinary and diagnostics capabilities, Mars has broadened its reach while maintaining its founding values.

Recent strategic moves — including the acquisition of Kellanova — underscore the company’s ambition to serve new consumers, strengthen its capabilities and expand into fast-growing categories.

Building for tomorrow

As Mars celebrates this milestone, the company says its focus remains firmly on the future: creating products and services that improve lives, supporting the communities it serves and reducing its environmental impact across its global operations.

Five generations on, the Mars family continues to steward the business with the belief that “the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today.”
