The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) has received a significant parliamentary boost this week as it hosts a special exhibition in the Upper Waiting Hall, showcasing the circularity and innovation of the UK’s metal packaging sector.
The exhibition, titled “A circular icon – the innovative spirit of metal packaging”, is supported by Perran Moon MP and celebrates the role of aluminium and steel packaging as resilient, sustainable solutions central to everyday life.
Jason Galley, director and chief executive of MPMA, said the exhibition was an opportunity to underline the unique environmental credentials of metal packaging. “We’re providing a snapshot of the remarkable world of metal packaging, revealing how its recycling, food sustainability and environmental credentials quietly support UK society,” he explained.
Latest government statistics featured at the exhibition highlight the sector’s strong recycling performance. Metal packaging achieves an overall recycling rate of 80.4%, with steel recorded as the most recycled packaging material at 86.6%. Aluminium beverage cans are also recognised as the UK’s most recycled beverage format, with a recycling rate of 81%.
The exhibition demonstrates how innovation and environmental responsibility are driving decarbonisation across the sector. From reducing raw material use and advancing resource efficiency, to investing in renewable energy and low-carbon aluminium and steel, the industry is leveraging high recycling rates to increase recycled content while delivering packaging that protects against water, light and air.
Perran Moon MP, whose constituency of Camborne, Redruth and Hayles has a long history of tin mining, praised the sector’s leadership. “Metal packaging is a model of permanence and resilience, with recycling rates exceeding 80%. The sector stands at the forefront of the UK’s green industrial revolution while supporting food security, reducing waste and creating skilled jobs across the UK,” he said.
Geoff Courtney, chair of MPMA, added: “Our members include some of the most recognisable names in UK and global manufacturing, spanning the entire metal packaging ecosystem. Through this exhibition we are demonstrating the role our members play, from production to supply chain, in supporting UK circularity and decarbonisation goals.”
The parliamentary showcase underscores the growing recognition of metal packaging’s contribution to sustainability and positions the sector as a key player in the UK’s transition to a circular economy.
