Ravenwood Packaging and ProPrint Group have announced a major milestone in sustainable fresh produce packaging with the launch of a UK-first 3×2 linerless apple format.

Developed for Kissabel Rouge — the premium, red-fleshed apple variety — the new six-pack configuration made its UK retail debut on December 2. This launch represents a significant evolution for the sector, scaling up from the previous 2×2 format used for Sassy apples to a larger, more robust configuration that remains entirely plastic-free.

The project was the result of an intensive multi-party collaboration between Ravenwood, ProPrint Group, Worldwide Fruit, and Smurfit Westrock. The design brief required a solution that mirrored the premium appeal of the Kissabel brand, which is famous for its vivid red skin and berry-like flavour, while adhering to strict retail sustainability targets.

By using a carton board tray paired with a linerless fruit lid, the partners successfully delivered a package that is fully kerbside recyclable and provides a striking alternative to traditional plastic-wrapped produce.

Central to the successful rollout was Ravenwood’s Nobac 5000L Fresh Produce Linerless Applicator.

Engineered specifically for the high-speed demands of the produce industry, this machinery ensured that the seasonal launch met its tight commercial deadlines. Following two successful trials at Ravenwood’s facility, the first production run was delivered just seven working days after artwork approval. The technology provides consistent, precise label placement and high-speed performance while significantly reducing material waste by eliminating the need for silicone backing paper.

Jan Rees, UK sales manager at Ravenwood Packaging, noted that the Kissabel project serves as a perfect example of how linerless technology can elevate premium fresh produce. Rees highlighted that the Nobac 5000L was developed to provide packers with both the efficiency and flexibility needed to bring innovative formats to market quickly. This launch reinforces the growing industry shift toward sustainable, paper-based solutions that do not sacrifice shelf presence or durability.

This latest development builds on the proven success of earlier linerless initiatives for Mansfield, owners of the Kissabel brand. By transitioning to the 3×2 format, the partners have demonstrated that linerless technology is capable of supporting larger pack sizes while meeting the environmental demands of modern retailers and consumers. With the combination of Ravenwood’s high-performance machinery and the printing expertise of ProPrint Group, Kissabel has entered the UK market with a standout, sustainable solution that sets a new standard for the category.
