Theo Michaels proves canned nutrition is tin-credible

TV chef and CANbassador Theo Michaels fronts the new campaign.
In a bid to demonstrate that budget-friendly cupboard staples can deliver high nutritional value, TV chef and author Theo Michaels has teamed up with Canned Food UK to launch the Protein Packed Cans campaign.
The digital initiative focuses on helping households cook smart, protein-dense meals that balance bold flavours with day-to-day convenience and affordability.
Michaels — a regular guest chef on BBC Morning Live and a former MasterChef contestant — is fronting the campaign in his role as an official “CANbassador.” The partnership arrives as consumer interest in cost-effective, high-protein home cooking continues to grow across the UK.
Elevating everyday cupboard staples
At the heart of the campaign is a series of four accessible recipes designed by Michaels. Each dish pairs everyday canned items like fish, beans, and pulses to prove that shelf-stable foods can anchor premium, satisfying meals without requiring hours of kitchen preparation or expensive ingredients.
The featured Protein Packed Cans menu includes:
- Butterbean & Tuna Bake: a modern, protein-heavy twist on Gigantes Plaki, a traditional Cypriot baked bean dish.
- Warm Mediterranean Lentil Salad: a quick, nutrient-dense option perfect for light lunches.
- Brazilian-Style Black Bean Stew: a hearty, deeply flavourful take on classic South American comfort food.
- Butternut Squash & Halloumi Curry: a vibrant, sweet-and-savoury vegetarian option ideal for midweek family dining.
All recipes are for casual dining, batch cooking, and quick weekday turnaround times.
Overcoming the ‘underestimated’ can
Canned Food UK — an organisation run by the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) — is working to re-establish the humble metal can as an essential component of modern culinary habits.
Theo Michaels noted that home cooks often overlook the culinary and nutritional integrity locked inside canned goods:
“Canned food is often underestimated but it’s a fantastic source of nutrition and flavour. Through this latest Canned Food UK campaign, we’re showing just how easy it is to create satisfying, protein-packed meals using ingredients many people already have in their cupboards. Each of my Protein Packed Cans recipes deliberately focus on full flavour and high-quality reinforcing how convenient and reliable canned foods are in everyday cooking thanks to their versatility and long shelf life.”
Merging nutrition with sustainability
Beyond the nutritional and economic benefits, the campaign underscores the environmental advantages of choosing canned ingredients. The metal packaging used to protect and preserve the food features a high recycling rate across the UK because the material can be recycled indefinitely without any loss in quality.
Jason Galley, director and chief executive of the MPMA, expressed strong confidence in the partnership’s capacity to influence positive kitchen habits:
“Theo Michaels is a brilliant partner for Canned Food UK. His passion for easy, nutritious cooking and his ability to connect with audiences by reflecting the latest food trends help bring the benefits of canned food to life. Theo’s all about creating dishes that are full of flavour, convenient and affordable using ingredients in highly recyclable metal packaging, helping to support easy sustainable habits in the home.”
