KHS Innoplant: from initial planning to turnkey plant operation

Strategic consultancy and master planning: KHS Innoplant translates customer visions into reliable feasibility studies, initial layouts and transparent CAPEX/OPEX calculations.
For food and beverage manufacturers planning a new facility or site expansion, KHS Innoplant shifts the focus from machine specifications to the underlying business model, offering a structured four-stage framework designed to secure financial predictability and long-term operational support.
Mapping out the big picture
When producers start a project with little more than a concept for entering a market, the planning process must account for factors far beyond the main filling line. KHS Innoplant integrates building dimensions, traffic areas, intralogistics, energy supply, and regional infrastructure into the initial layout.
Rather than starting with factory structures or individual machine specifications, the planning process begins directly with commercial objectives. As Heiko Bucher, senior lead consultant at KHS, explains, “Before going into any planning detail, we first focus on which business model is to be realized with the new beverage plant and which market goals our customers wish to achieve.”
Four-stage implementation for financial clarity
To give manufacturers operational control and financial predictability, the planning framework is split into four consecutive stages. The initial phase focuses on translating raw concepts into concrete operational data. As Bucher states: “During the first phase, we translate the basic idea into solid facts and figures.” This step calculates required capacities, space demands, and expected media consumption to produce clear capital investment and operating budgets. These figures give producers a solid foundation for bank negotiations, providing significant reassurance.
As Bucher notes: “Our customers greatly appreciate the fact that they can present investors and banks with reliable figures; this gives all those involved enormous security right from the outset.”
Following the master plan, the engineering phase maps out system technology and factory layouts. Specialised utility teams design media supply solutions incorporating heat pumps, photovoltaics, or biomass plants, with the explicit goal that “our aim is to create ideal conditions for on-demand system operation through predictive utility planning.”
Once planning is complete, KHS handles physical assembly, installation, and commissioning on site. Plant start-up then transitions smoothly into long-term operational backing. Rejecting a short-term handover approach, Bucher emphasises that, “We don’t just hand over the key and let the customer get on with it.” Instead, “We specifically qualify operating personnel on site, optimize processes during ongoing operation and are a constant reliable partner at our client’s side.”
Flexible system integration
Every production site operates under unique constraints. Through an open-system approach, KHS integrates specialised partner expertise directly into the overall plant architecture, allowing food and beverage manufacturers to build customised production lines free from rigid system boundaries.
