Henkel debuts industry-first cold seal for barrier-coated paper

Chemical and consumer goods giant Henkel has launched Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, the first cold seal solution specifically engineered for barrier-coated paper packaging, addressing a critical technical hurdle in the industry’s shift away from plastic.

As global brands increasingly adopt “paperisation” strategies to meet sustainability goals, the transition has been hampered by a lack of high-performance sealing options for paper treated with protective barriers.

Henkel’s new solution is designed to provide a secure seal for heat-sensitive products — such as chocolate, snacks, and ice cream — without compromising the barrier properties of the paper substrate.

For manufacturers, the primary operational advantage of Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE is its ability to run on existing high-speed production lines without requiring thermal exposure. Key technical benefits include:

• Aroma & quality preservation: by sealing without heat, the mechanical stress on the packaging is minimised and the sensory integrity of the food is protected.
• Process stability: the coating is press-ready and maintains a consistently strong seal even at high line speeds, tolerating typical paper migrants that often cause performance fluctuations.

The launch arrives as the industry prepares for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates stricter recyclability standards for all packaging formats. With over 70% of global consumers now viewing recyclable packaging as a priority, this solution allows brand owners to replace plastic secondary packaging and confectionery wraps with functional, circular paper alternatives.
