Integrated potato chip processing line transforms production

FlavorWright All-in-One seasoning system from PPM Technologies.
PPM Technologies and Key Technology have launched an integrated potato chip processing line that unifies slicing, frying, sorting and seasoning. This system helps processors manage raw variability, reduce labour pressure and maintain consistent quality across high‑volume operations.
Unified design strengthens performance across the line
The new line combines PPM’s frying, seasoning and handling systems with Key’s advanced optical sorting. This integration matters because processors often struggle to coordinate separate machines. However, a single system improves control and reduces operational risk.
PPM anchors the line with its BatchWright and CookWright fryers. These fryers deliver precise control and extend oil life. They also reduce downtime through clean‑in‑place features.
Optical sorting adds critical quality protection
Key Technology’s COMPASS sorter is the final quality gate before packaging. It uses multi‑channel sensor data and multi‑wavelength strobing to detect dark spots, green defects and fryer debris. This approach avoids complex laser systems and reduces maintenance.
Moreover, recipe‑driven controls simplify operation. Open sanitary design shortens cleaning time. As a result, processors maintain consistent inspection performance during long production runs.
Seasoning precision protects final product quality
After sorting, PPM’s FlavorWright All‑in‑One system applies liquid and dry seasonings. This stage is crucial because any inconsistency reaches the finished product. Therefore, the system uses precise application controls to ensure even coverage.
It handles simple salt blends and complex multi‑stage coatings. Quick‑release parts support fast changeovers. IP65 washdown capability keeps sanitation efficient.
Coordinated conveying reduces breakage and waste
PPM’s slice feeder meters potatoes into the slicer at a controlled rate. This step ensures uniform slices and consistent frying. A network of conveyors then moves chips gently between stages.
Horizontal‑motion conveyors reduce breakage and seasoning loss. Vibratory conveyors meter product accurately to weighers. Recirculation conveyors keep product flowing when packaging stalls, which protects uptime.
Data insights strengthen decision‑making
The integrated potato chip processing line includes centralised and local controls. Operators gain real‑time visibility across the system. Key Discovery software analyses every object passing through the COMPASS sorter. Consequently, processors can track yield, reject rates and raw variability.
These insights help teams adjust upstream processes and improve long‑term performance.
