Celebrating World Packaging Day

The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has officially established 6 September 2026 as World Packaging Day, creating an annual platform for industry, academia, and society to highlight the indispensable role of packaging in modern life.
Aligned with the anniversary of the WPO’s foundation, this global observance seeks to transform how society views the materials responsible for delivering and protecting everyday goods. Although packaging is frequently scrutinised for its environmental impact, World Packaging Day broadens the conversation by emphasising its core contribution to feeding, supplying, and safeguarding more than eight billion people globally.
A primary objective of this initiative is tackling food insecurity through the theme Packaging Against Food Waste. By extending shelf life, protecting perishable items, and maintaining safety standards, advanced packaging solutions act as a vital defence against food spoilage throughout global supply chains.
At the same time, under the focus of Packaging and Sustainability, the initiative serves as a catalyst for circular economy principles, eco-design, and material innovation. It calls on both manufacturers and consumers to prioritise materials that are reusable, recyclable, and responsibly sourced.
Beyond safety and sustainability, the observance highlights economic enablement through Packaging and Economic Growth. Across e-commerce, manufacturing, logistics, and trade, reliable packaging minimises transit damage and maintains the efficiency of international commerce.
Designed as a decentralised effort, World Packaging Day drives global collaboration by encouraging businesses, universities, and local communities to host workshops, factory tours, and educational activities using the hashtag #worldpackagingday. The initiative moves public perception away from seeing packaging as potential waste, reframing it as a tool for human health, economic stability, and global progress.
