Syrup tin is the golden oldie

The Guinness World Records has nominated Lyle’s Golden Syrup as the world’s oldest branding.

The product’s distinctive Victorian packaging, first developed in 1885, depicts bees making a home in a dead lion and includes the biblical quotation“out of the strong came forth sweetness. Lyle merged with Henry Tate & Sons in 1921 to form Tate & Lyle, which still owns the Lyle’s Golden Syrup brand. The company claims the brand is now worth an estimated £19.3 million.

The product’s claim to fame over the years is said to be partly because the firm has kept the original packaging. Alison Ashman, senior brand manager for Lyle’s Golden Syrup, said,“While we’ve extended our product range and added other formats, we know that the green and gold tin will always have a place on
Britain’s kitchen shelves.
