When it comes to sustainable food packaging, tailor-made work is required.

“Barrier paper is never standard, but always tailored to the product it is to package,” says Peter Hackl, head of packaging at delfort.

At Fachpack 2025 Hall 3 / Booth number 3-368), delfort will be showcasing its range of barrier papers for a wide range of applications for the first time – from popsicles to chocolate bars and bars to muesli. So-called “fold-wrap” applications, for example for butter, soup cubes or confectionery, will also be exhibiting at the trade fair.

Every food has its own requirements for barrier functionality. For example, ice cream and other frozen products must be protected against moisture and freezer burn, among other things. Cheese or chocolate require fat barriers that are reliable even at high temperatures. Dry products such as muesli, rice or powder, on the other hand, require strong barriers against oxygen and moisture.

“In each case, we specifically combine the right barrier with the requirements for storage, transport, packaging process and recycling,” explains Hackl.

The form of packaging is just as crucial: delfort will be showing spiral folds, stand-up pouches and flow-wrap packaging at Fachpack – including transparent paper variants. All papers can be printed in flexographic and gravure printing and are heat or cold sealable. They can also be run on standard FFS packaging machines.

“We ensure this through close cooperation with various packaging machine manufacturers,” says Hackl. This is because the setting of the machines often determines whether the changeover from conventional materials to new, sustainable barrier papers works smoothly. “Here we create process reliability for our customers through preliminary tests.”

In addition to the technical aspects, the focus is also on recyclability and regulation.

“Legal requirements such as the PPWR, the EU Packaging Regulation, are a central guideline for us in development,” says Hackl.

In addition, delfort’s barrier papers are made from renewable fibres from pulp suppliers that are FSC and/or PEFC certified – and are recyclable according to the CEPI test method.

On 23 September, 2 – 4 pm: delfort and its research partner delsci will present application examples for paper packaging in the exhibitor forum “Pavilion alternative packaging solutions”.
