Surging UK demand drives Damm’s £70m Bedford brewery investment

Responding directly to the UK’s insatiable demand for its flagship lager, Spanish brewing giant Damm has officially opened its first-ever brewery outside the Iberian Peninsula — a £70 million state-of-the-art facility in Bedford.
The unprecedented investment is a direct consequence of the brand’s explosive growth, with UK consumers now pouring 150 pints of Estrella Damm every minute.
The UK market has become a critical growth engine for Damm, recording double-digit growth in the past year alone. With sales on track for a record-breaking 2025 and projections for another record year in 2026, the company’s investment was a strategic necessity to secure its supply chain and meet consumer demand head-on. Estrella Damm has been brewed at the newly christened Damm Eagle Brewery since spring 2024.
“Our commitment goes beyond capital investment,” said Jorge Villavecchia, managing director of Damm. “We are bringing skills, innovation and a vision of how industry must evolve to remain competitive…we believe that our decision to invest in Bedford will contribute not only to Damm’s growth, but also to the resilience of the UK’s wider economy.”
The £70 million modernisation has transformed the historic Bedford site, adding a new brewstream and an advanced canning line that have nearly doubled the brewery’s capacity to 1.8 million hectolitres per year. The investment not only allows Damm to satisfy the current thirst for its beer but also positions it for future market capture.
The modernised facility allows for significant diversification. Advanced syrup handling and mixing technology mean the site can now produce soft drinks and “beyond beer” beverages, allowing Damm to tap into other high-demand categories.
Jason Stockwood, Minister for Investment, hailed the move as a significant endorsement of the UK market. “Damm’s investment is a vote of confidence in the UK…since acquiring the brewery, Damm has tripled its number of direct employees in the UK. Damm’s investment will support sustainability through a new canning line equipped with significant advances in technology and energy efficiency. And it will support innovation through a new incubator hub.”
This focus on future demand is central to Damm’s UK strategy. The company is launching an Accelerator Programme to support industry start-ups, creating an incubator hub for fledgling drinks brands to leverage Damm’s production and distribution expertise. This will position the UK as a global hub for Damm’s “beyond beer” innovation.
The investment is also having a significant local impact. Damm has already tripled its UK workforce from 56 to 180 since acquiring the site in 2022, and this latest phase is expected to double the number of direct employees at the Bedford brewery.
As the company approaches its 150th anniversary, the opening of The Damm Eagle Brewery marks a milestone driven entirely by British consumer demand, solidifying its ambition to become the UK’s largest independent beer company.
