BW Packaging redefines throughput with the Hayssen X850: Next-Gen Flow Wrapper

BW Packaging, Barry-Wehmiller’s packaging machinery business, has announced the launch of its Hayssen X850, a multi-jaw flow wrapper engineered to deliver exceptional seal integrity at high speeds for demanding food products.
The new machine is designed to be the successor to the company’s long-standing Hayssen RT model, a trusted fixture in the block and sliced cheese sector for nearly 70 years.
The X850 introduces significant advancements rooted in direct customer feedback, focusing on maximising throughput and simplifying operator experience.
Performance data highlights the X850’s capability to cycle up to 300 packs per minute (PPM). Crucially, it achieves this speed while providing over 1 second of dwell time, ensuring the high seal integrity required for sensitive dairy and food applications.
“The Hayssen X850 was designed to build upon the strong foundation of our previous Hayssen RT model,” said Jim Kolmus, vice president of innovation, BW Packaging. “The X850’s ability to detect and clear product jams without stopping the line significantly boosts overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).”
The machine incorporates a patented individual ring technology and a quick-release jaw design, positioning it as a unique solution in the current market, according to the company.
Beyond speed, the X850 features technology aimed at modernising line management and reducing labour.
Brantley Turner, senior product manager, BW Packaging, emphasised the machine’s dual focus on power and intelligence.
“The Hayssen X850 has both brawn and brains,” Turner stated. “With RFID login and advanced OpView HMI standard on every machine, operation is made simple for any operator.”
Key benefits for line operators and maintenance teams include:
- Reduced maintenance time: The servo jaw control minimises wear, and the overall design dramatically reduces the number of tasks and time required for routine maintenance, a direct result of customer feedback.
- Easy film handling: a refined film unwind system allows operators to easily fine-tune film tracking, which simplifies film loading and further reduces downtime.
The X850 is constructed with a stainless steel frame for IP66 washdown capability and features hygienic sloped surfaces, meeting the stringent sanitation requirements of today’s food and dairy manufacturers. Furthermore, the machine’s independent temperature control allows it to run a wide range of films and zippers, including emerging recyclable materials, addressing the industry’s push toward sustainability.
For generations, cheese manufacturers have relied on Hayssen — a trusted brand within the BW Packaging portfolio — and the X850 is set to continue that legacy with a platform that delivers performance, dependability, and support for parts, service, and upgrades.
