EIT Food has announced the winners of its 2026 Innovation Prize, awarding seven entrepreneurs for pioneering agri-food technologies that have successfully moved from laboratory prototypes to commercial reality. Each winner received €10,000 in recognition of their potential to transform global food systems toward greater sustainability and resilience.

The awards, formerly known as the Marketed Innovation Prize, specifically target start-ups that have demonstrated clear product-market fit. This year’s cohort spans a wide array of technological breakthroughs, ranging from fungal-based “whole-cut” meat alternatives to AI-powered autonomous farming robots.

The 2026 winners and breakthroughs:

  • Rising Innovator Award: Gustavo Adolfo Gonzalez Flores (Agree NET) for PìFresc, a plant-based coating that extends fruit shelf-life by 25 days without the use of plastics or synthetic chemicals.

  • Women in Innovation Award: Randi Wahlsten (MATR Foods) for MATR Fungal, a clean-label meat alternative produced through solid-state fungal fermentation applied directly to organic grains and vegetables.

  • Global Reach Innovator Award: Iratxe Perales (Microfy Systems) for HoneyAI, an automated microscopy system that uses computer vision to autonomously analyse honey quality and origins.

  • Impact Innovator Award: Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez (Notpla) for the Seaview Range, the world’s first fully natural window box packaging made entirely from seaweed-based coatings and windows.

  • Tech Pioneer Award: Ilker Bektaş (Orbiba Robotics) for Ecominos, an AI-powered modular robot that automates weeding and soil health monitoring using CERN-licensed laser technology.

  • Market Excellence Innovator Award: Srdjan Tadic (Atfield Technologies) for Winessence, a precise vineyard management platform that integrates disease prediction and growth tracking to reduce chemical spraying.

  • Student Innovator Award: Oluwaseun Olawusi (Gloxad Academy) for Gloxad, a personalized learning platform designed to equip the next generation of workers with specialized agritech and food-tech skills.

Bridging the ‘Valley of Death’

The prize is designed to highlight the importance of the commercialization phase in the agri-food sector. While early-stage research is abundant, many startups struggle to navigate the “valley of death” — the gap between a working prototype and a scalable, profitable business model.

“With the support of the EIT Food Accelerator Network, we were able to move from pilots to commercial launch in just 12 months,” said Gustavo Adolfo Gonzalez Flores, winner of the Rising Innovator Award.

The 2026 winners will gain more than just financial support; they are set to receive increased visibility across EIT Food’s global channels and opportunities to present their solutions to international corporate partners and investors.
