Sidel unveiled a unique 1-litre edible oil bottle that combines laser-blowing technology with a proprietary Power Ring design.

Debuting at interpack 2026, the innovation allows food and drink manufacturers to significantly lightweight their packaging while increasing structural integrity.

The primary benefit for manufacturers is a 20% weight reduction compared to standard halogen-blown bottles.

Sidel’s laser-heated technology allows for a fundamental shift in packaging engineering: PET material is intentionally concentrated only where it actively contributes to mechanical performance, while unnecessary material is removed from low-stress zones.

This localised material distribution yields a 1L bottle weighing just 16.5g — marking a 4g PET raw material saving against a comparable halogen-blown equivalent (20.5g) without sacrificing container performance.

Historically, aggressive lightweighting in the edible oil sector has compromised a bottle’s top load capacity and consumer handling, leading to crushing during transit or squeezing failures during pouring. Sidel’s design directly solves these supply chain and consumer pain points.

  • Supply chain protection: the targeted reinforcement ensures the bottle maintains a secured top load performance equal to heavier alternatives, ensuring pallet stability and robustness throughout logistics networks.
  • Consumer ergonomics: the built-in Power Ring acts as a structural belt, concentrating material precisely where consumers grip the container. This maintains side load performance, preventing spilling or buckling when the bottle is opened and poured.
  • Material optimisation: while the grip area is reinforced, other sections — such as under the neck and the bottle base — feature optimised stretching and a minimal quantity of plastic.

The technology is fully compatible with sustainable sourcing strategies, as the lightweighted structure can be blown using 100% recycled PET (rPET). This helps food brands lower their carbon footprint, reduce material costs, and comply with strict international plastic regulations.

“This 100% rPET bottle clearly shows how laser precision allows us to rethink packaging design for edible oil,” said Jerome Neveu, packaging and mould product manager at Sidel. “The Power Ring design is a concrete example of mastering exact PET distribution to optimise edible oil packaging while meeting the functional demands of this market.”
