Smart 2D Profile Sensors raise the bar
Sensor specialist Baumer has expanded its Smart Vision portfolio with a new generation of 2D profile sensors engineered to tackle demanding inspection and positioning tasks across packaging and processing lines. The enhanced OX series introduces a revised Advanced Toolset that enables the sensors to perform functions traditionally reserved for high‑end camera systems — while retaining the simplicity and cost‑efficiency of a compact sensor.
Packaging lines increasingly rely on automated inspection to maintain quality, reduce waste and ensure compliance. Baumer’s upgraded OX sensors directly address three persistent challenges:
- Presence detection — confirming that components such as caps, labels, seals or trays are correctly positioned.
- Completeness checks — identifying missing items in multipacks or incomplete assemblies.
- Quality inspection — detecting defects such as gaps, misalignments or malformed parts.
By analysing height profiles rather than full images, the sensors deliver fast, stable results even in environments where lighting, vibration or product variation can disrupt camera‑based systems.
Baumer’s development of its Advanced Toolset has resulted in a more capable generation of profile sensors that can take on complex inspection tasks with minimal integration effort.
High‑precision measurement
Basic profile data is captured with up to 5 m precision in Z and 30 µm resolution in X, enabling fine detection of gaps, edges and height differences.
Large measuring ranges
With ranges up to 500 mm and fields of view up to 300 mm, the sensors can inspect wider packaging formats or multiple objects simultaneously.
On‑sensor evaluation
All processing—OK/NOK decisions, object counting, position data—is performed directly inside the sensor. No external controller is required.
Power-over-Ethernet and flexible interfaces
Integration is streamlined, reducing cabling and simplifying installation on existing packaging lines.
The OX sensors project a laser line onto the target object and capture its height profile. The Advanced Toolset then interprets this profile to detect deviations, missing components or dimensional errors. Because the evaluation is profile‑based rather than image‑based, the system is less sensitive to ambient light, more stable in high‑speed environments, easier to configure and more cost‑effective than camera systems.
This makes them particularly suited to packaging applications where consistency, speed and uptime are critical. Baumer has also focused on usability. Operators can configure up to 20 tools through an intuitive web interface, with live visualisation enabling real‑time optimisation and immediate validation of inspection results. This reduces commissioning time and helps packaging teams adjust parameters quickly when switching formats or introducing new SKUs.
