Heineken backs regenerative barley at scale

Heineken UK is launching one of the country’s largest regenerative malting barley programmes, directly rewarding British farmers for adopting regenerative farming practices in a move that could accelerate the mainstream adoption of lower-impact agriculture across the brewing supply chain.
The initiative, developed with maltsters Muntons and Boortmalt, barley merchant Cefetra and independent agronomists Soil Capital, will see growers receive a premium payment on regenerative barley yields, helping offset the financial risk of transitioning to new farming methods.
By 2027, almost half of the malted barley used across Heineken UK’s portfolio — including Heineken, Birra Moretti, Foster’s, Cruzcampo, John Smith’s and Amstel — will be sourced from regenerative agriculture. The first harvest from the programme will take place in 2026, with the barley entering production and reaching consumers in 2027.
For food and drink manufacturers, the announcement signals a significant shift beyond sustainability commitments towards supply chain investment. Rather than relying solely on procurement targets, Heineken is directly incentivising primary producers, creating a commercially backed model that could be replicated across other ingredient categories.
The programme focuses on improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, enhancing water management and building climate resilience through practices including reduced soil disturbance, cover cropping and more diverse crop rotations. Participating farms will receive tailored agronomic support, with practices adapted to individual land conditions rather than following a standardised approach.
The initiative will cover major barley-growing regions across England and Scotland, including East Anglia, the East Midlands, the South East, the South West, Fife and the Scottish Borders, reinforcing Heineken UK’s reliance on domestic agriculture. The brewer produces more than 1.3 billion pints annually in the UK, with more than 95% of the beer it sells brewed domestically.
The programme also introduces independent measurement, reporting and verification through Soil Capital. More than 30 environmental indicators — including soil health, biodiversity, carbon retention and water management — will be monitored, providing transparent data on farm-level outcomes.

This programme is about working with partners to make regenerative agriculture practical, scalable and commercially viable by strengthening soils and helping farms stay fit for the future.”
Mark Tyldesley, chief executive officer at Muntons, added that the programme’s distinguishing feature is its collaborative scale across the supply chain. “We know from our work with growers that every farm is different, and the transition to regenerative agriculture needs to be practical, commercially realistic and tailored to individual land.”

For the wider food and drink sector, the programme reflects a growing evolution in regenerative agriculture strategies. Increasingly, manufacturers are moving beyond pilot projects and sustainability pledges towards long-term commercial models that share the costs — and rewards — of environmental transition with primary producers.
As climate resilience, supply security and Scope 3 emissions become higher priorities across food manufacturing, Heineken UK’s investment shows how manufacturers can strengthen domestic agricultural supply chains while supporting measurable environmental outcomes.
Rather than treating regenerative agriculture as a niche initiative, the brewer is embedding it into the procurement strategy for some of the UK’s biggest beer brands, demonstrating how sustainability is becoming an operational supply chain decision rather than simply a corporate responsibility commitment.
