Plastipak has opened a €25 million PET Material Center in Verbania, Italy, to make pakPET Single Pellet Solution, a resin with 30% recycled content built in.

For brand owners, the development gives them more recycled content without rewriting the production playbook.

Plastipak Packaging, Inc. announced the opening of the site on 14 October, with Italian government officials and CEO Ed Morgan attending the ceremony.

The company says it invested more than €25 million in the centre, which sits alongside its five recycling facilities worldwide and draws on its expertise across recycling, resin production, preforms and packaging manufacturing.

Recycled content, ready to run

The centre’s product, pakPET Single Pellet Solution, combines virgin PET performance with built-in recycled content in a single, ready-to-use resin.

According to Plastipak, the single-pellet formulation simplifies processing and supports consistent packaging performance, helping customers integrate recycled content into existing PET operations.

The company lists five headline features: 30% recycled content in one pellet; drop-in compatibility for existing PET operations; simplified processing and qualification; food-contact approval for applicable packaging applications; and certified post-consumer feedstock traceability through EN15343 certification.

“Customers need solutions that make recycled content easier to incorporate while delivering the quality and reliability their operations depend on,” said Pedro Martins, executive managing director, Europe, at Plastipak. “Our PET Material Center in Verbania brings together Plastipak’s materials expertise and manufacturing capabilities to help customers move their packaging goals forward.”

Where brands feel the difference

The emphasis throughout is on removing friction. For brands, the practical hurdles of adding recycled content tend to sit in the plant and the approval process, rather than in the ambition itself. Plastipak’s framing targets both: drop-in compatibility speaks to line performance, while simplified qualification speaks to the time and effort of getting a new material signed off.

The food-contact approval is relevant for brands in food and beverage, and the resin is positioned for a wider set of uses. Plastipak says it suits food and beverage containers, home and personal care packaging, pharmaceutical packaging and thermoforming.

Traceability is the other point worth noting. Certified post-consumer feedstock traceability through EN15343 gives brands a documented basis for the recycled content they report, which is useful for anyone who needs to substantiate packaging claims.

One partner

Plastipak describes itself as a leading recycler of rigid plastic packaging that produces food-grade post-consumer recycled resin, and it also designs and manufactures rigid plastic containers.

The Verbania centre links those capabilities: by developing ready-to-use resin solutions, the company says it helps customers make informed packaging decisions. For brands, that points to a supplier able to cover material, preform and packaging under one roof, a potentially simpler arrangement than coordinating separate suppliers for each stage.

Statement of intent

Plastipak sees customers who want recycled content but cannot afford disruption to quality, throughput or approvals.

A resin that arrives with recycled content already built in, backed by traceability, lets brands treat recycled PET as a standard material choice rather than a special project.
