Sun Chemical introduces upgraded inks to meet food-contact regulations

Sun Chemical has introduced its next-generation SolarFlex FSP UV flexographic ink range, a development designed to help label and packaging converters navigate increasingly stringent regulatory requirements across Europe and global markets.
Engineered specifically for food-contact packaging, labels, and shrink sleeves, the upgraded ink formulation meets or surpasses the strict criteria established by both the German Ink Ordinance (GIO) and the Swiss Ink Ordinance (SIO).
Low-migration engineering and high-speed performance
The new formulation relies on carefully selected raw materials to minimise the risks of chemical migration, flavour transfer, and unpleasant odour contamination in sensitive packaging applications.
Despite these rigorous low-migration requirements, the inks maintain exceptional pressroom performance, featuring low viscosity, minimal odor, and rapid curing capabilities. Extensive field trials and validations at key European packaging facilities have confirmed that the SolarFlex FSP range successfully supports high-speed production environments, achieving stable printing speeds exceeding 200 meters per minute without sacrificing print quality or regulatory compliance.
Broad colour versatility
To give converters maximum versatility, the ink series is available in standard and intense four-colour expanded colour gamut process inks, alongside high-strength mono-pigmented blending colours that easily accommodate a wide spectrum of brand colours.
Jonathan Sexton, product manager for energy curing at Sun Chemical, emphasised that the rollout addresses the growing difficulties brand owners face when balancing strict regulatory compliance with high-volume output. This launch forms an integral part of Sun Chemical’s broader corporate commitment to delivering sustainable, migration-compliant solutions across energy-curable, water-based, and sheetfed packaging portfolios, enabling manufacturers to pursue sustainability objectives while maintaining robust productivity.
