DuPont has launched the DuPont Sugar Separation Advisor, an interactive digital platform designed to streamline and accelerate chromatographic separation for sugar and sweetener manufacturers.

As producers increasingly diversify into high-value alternative sweeteners — such as allulose, tagatose, sorbitol, xylose, and oligosaccharides — determining how to efficiently isolate and purify target molecules from complex feed streams has become a major early-stage process bottleneck.

DuPont’s new self-service digital tool addresses this challenge by helping engineers quickly evaluate separation feasibility and shortlist the best resin candidates for laboratory testing.

Empirical data over theoretical modeling

Unlike traditional software that relies strictly on theoretical calculations, the Sugar Separation Advisor is built on decades of DuPont’s application expertise and extensive laboratory testing. The underlying database indexes experimental resolution coefficients (R-values) derived from pulse testing across hundreds of sugar, polyol, and impurity combinations.

Key features of the new digital platform include:

  • Custom feed stream composition: users can select their target sugar or sweetener for recovery and add up to four additional sugars, derivatives, or contaminants to replicate their exact feed stream.
  • Targeted resin shortlisting: the tool evaluates the feed parameters against DuPont’s AmberLite chromatographic separation resins — including potassium- and calcium-form variants — to recommend optimal bead sizes, water retention capacities, and ionic forms.
  • Accelerated R&D tiimelines: by eliminating guesswork during early screening, the platform helps manufacturers reduce pilot testing cycles, cut labor costs, and speed up market entry.

Meeting industry demand for alternative sweeteners

The shift toward reduced-calorie, functional, and bio-based ingredients has forced sweetener manufacturers to process increasingly complex feedstocks. Separating compounds with near-identical molecular structures — such as separating specific rare sugars from secondary isomers — requires precise resin selection based on either size exclusion or ionic affinity.

By making its proprietary chromatographic database accessible through a guided interface, DuPont aims to bridge the gap between initial laboratory concepts and full-scale industrial production.

The DuPont Sugar Separation Advisor is currently accessible online for process engineers, research teams, and plant managers globally.
