Amcor’s Flava closure boosts sustainability

Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging, has launched its latest innovation for the condiment and sauce market: the 55 mm Flava Flip Top Closure 38/400.
Designed specifically for high-viscosity products like mayonnaise, ketchup, and sweet sauces, the new closure offers food and drink manufacturers a path to reducing their carbon footprint without sacrificing consumer convenience.
The Flava closure represents a significant engineering milestone in the push for circularity, offering a lightweighted alternative to traditional 38/400 neck finish caps.
The primary appeal for manufacturers lies in the closure’s material savings. Amcor has achieved an absolute weight reduction of 1.9 g, bringing the cap down to just 8.5 g. This represents an 18.7% relative reduction in weight compared to the previous generation of 55mm Flip Top Closures.
For large-scale producers, these savings translate directly into reduced Scope 3 emissions and lower plastic tax liabilities. “The new Flava Flip Top Closure will help customers reach their carbon reduction targets thanks to its lighter design,” said Peter Briggs, UK sales director for food and beverage at Amcor.
Beyond weight, the Flava closure is designed to fit into existing recycling streams. Key features include:
- Mono-material construction: simplifies the recycling process.
- Recyclable-ready: compatible with PET, HDPE, and PP bottles where infrastructure exists.
- Integrated compatibility: can be paired with various PET and HDPE bottles from Amcor’s existing portfolio.
The closure is available in a variety of colours and orifice sizes, featuring circular valves to ensure clean dispensing.
While sustainability is a major driver, Amcor has ensured that the user experience remains a priority. The flip-top design is engineered to remain robust under frequent use while maintaining a clean pour.
“Weight saving is critical in reducing the carbon impact of the closure, [but] it does not compromise performance,” Briggs added. “Getting this balance right is crucial for consumers. They can be reassured that the product can be dispensed cleanly and easily.”
As food and drink manufacturers face intensifying pressure to meet 2030 sustainability goals, the Flava closure provides a plug-and-play solution that balances high-volume industrial efficiency with the requirements of a circular economy.
