Domino Printing Sciences has expanded its thermal inkjet portfolio with the launch of the Gx‑Series PRO Printhead, a new coding solution engineered to support manufacturers as the industry transitions to GS1 Digital Link and variable 2D codes.

The launch comes ahead of interpack 2026, where 2D coding is expected to dominate discussions around traceability, automation and supply‑chain transparency.

With retailers and global supply chains pushing for greater accuracy and data‑rich identification, manufacturers now require coding systems capable of printing larger data carriers, at higher contrast, and at full industrial line speeds. Domino says the Gx‑Series PRO has been built specifically to meet these demands, offering a future‑ready platform for food, beverage, fresh and chilled, pharmaceutical and direct‑to‑box applications.

A major advantage for producers is the printhead’s ability to embed best‑before dates, batch information and other variable data directly into each 2D code, enabling dynamic pricing, automated expiry checks and faster, more accurate recalls. When paired with Domino Automation, the company’s centralised label‑management and deployment software, manufacturers can validate codes before printing, reduce product and label waste, and mitigate the financial and reputational risks associated with coding errors.

Speed and accuracy are central to the new platform. The Gx‑Series PRO delivers crisp, high‑contrast GS1 2D codes at high throughput, supported by seamless integration with Domino’s R‑Series smart vision system, which inspects every code inline and flags issues before they impact production. The combination provides a fully integrated coding‑and‑verification workflow from a single supplier.

Compliance has also been a key development priority. Domino is developing both water‑based and solvent‑based inks manufactured in accordance with EuPIA GMP, supporting food‑packaging compliance as regulatory expectations tighten across Europe and beyond.

With a 23 mm print height, high optical density, high resolution and long throw distance, the Gx‑Series PRO is designed for complex, high‑speed environments such as meat, fish and poultry lines, chilled‑food operations, pharmaceutical packaging and general‑purpose coding. Its flexibility allows manufacturers to adopt 2D coding without major line redesigns.

James Gibbins, global thermal inkjet product manager at Domino, said the shift to GS1 Digital Link represents one of the most significant changes in coding for decades. “With our new Gx‑Series PRO Printhead and our R‑Series vision system, we provide manufacturers with a simple, fully integrated solution for coding and verification – all from a single trusted supplier,” he said.

The Gx‑Series PRO builds on Domino’s long‑established TIJ expertise, offering a more adaptable and future‑proof platform as manufacturers navigate rapid technological and regulatory change. For producers preparing for the widespread adoption of 2D codes, the new printhead provides a route to higher accuracy, lower waste and stronger compliance — all essential as supply chains become more data‑driven.
