In response to the rapid rise of moderation culture and evolving drinking habits, the spirits titan is launching new mid-strength variants across its iconic flagship spirits portfolio.

The lower-ABV line-up offers consumers lighter options of their favourite brands without compromising on the signature flavour profiles they expect.

Tapping into the moderation movement

The introduction of mid-strength spirits comes as consumer demand for low-and-no and lower-alcohol options reaches an all-time high. Modern drinkers — particularly younger demographics — are increasingly seeking flexible, lower-ABV alternatives that fit into mid-week socialising, casual dining, and wellness-focused lifestyles.

By creating reduced-alcohol versions of its core range, Diageo aims to bridge the gap between full-strength traditional spirits and 0.0% alcohol-free alternatives. The strategy allows the brand owner to capture “mindful drinkers” who want to enjoy the ritual and taste of a premium spirit while maintaining control over their alcohol intake.

Maintaining premium taste & portfolio credentials

Formulating lower-ABV spirits presents a distinct technical challenge: preserving the rich mouthfeel, complex botanicals, and distinct taste profiles that define world-class spirit brands. Diageo’s innovation team spent extensive time perfecting the liquid formulations to ensure the mid-strength variants deliver the same premium serve experience when mixed or served over ice.

The rollout enables Diageo to expand its footprint across both on-trade venues and off-trade retail aisles, giving bartenders and shoppers greater flexibility when crafting cocktails or choosing at-home serves.

Driving category growth

With the mid-strength category rapidly accelerating, Diageo’s entry with heavyweight household brands signals a major vote of confidence in the lower-ABV sector. The initiative is expected to drive incremental growth across grocery and convenience channels by encouraging consumers to trade into lighter, premium options across varied drinking occasions.
