Food and drink producers ‘pouring cash down the drain’

Poor water efficiency means food and drink producers in the UK could be pouring up to ₤160,000 a day down the drain, according to a new survey from sustainable business body Envirowise.

The research found that companies are losing out on combined annual cost savings of more than £58 million.

Nearly two-thirds of companies surveyed said they did not currently measure or keep track of the water they use in any way. Envirowise also found that 85 per cent of food and drink firms have no water reduction targets in place.

“Although many food and drink manufacturers have made strong progress on reducing their water use, there are still opportunities for more companies in the sector to reap the benefits, says Envirowise water specialist Claire Sweeney.

In order help companies boost their water efficiency, Envirowise is urging food and drink businesses to sign up to Rippleffect – a free efficiency scheme to help them identify simple water savings.
