Ahlstrom, a global leader in fibre-based specialty materials, has delivered a breakthrough in sustainable coffee packaging with the launch of its GreenPod Home portfolio.

The new range offers a solution for the coffee pod market, earning the prestigious OK compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria.

This certification confirms that the materials can successfully break down and biodegrade in domestic composting conditions. Critically, the GreenPod Home materials leave no toxic residues or persistent microplastics, giving consumers a truly convenient and environmentally responsible way to dispose of used pods.

The introduction of GreenPod Home directly addresses the escalating consumer demand and tightening regulations for sustainable food packaging. The new materials are designed to be compatible with all common converting lines and are engineered to deliver optimal brewing performance, ensuring no compromise on the consumer experience.

“Demand for sustainable alternatives drives innovation in coffee markets. Although Ahlstrom was already able to offer industrially compostable solutions, this home compostable patent-pending solution is a major step forward,” stated Patrice Blanc, head of R&D at Ahlstrom. He noted that the launch reinforces the company’s “strong credentials in biodegradable fibre-based solutions for coffee applications.”

Philippe Sevoz, vice president, beverage and casing, emphasised the strategic importance of the launch: “Aligned with Ahlstrom’s sustainability priorities and incoming stronger regulations within the food packaging industry, we are committed to becoming the market reference in sustainability and to offer our customers a complete portfolio of heat-sealable and non-heat-sealable home compostable tea and coffee solutions.”

The GreenPod Home portfolio positions Ahlstrom at the forefront of the shift towards fully circular coffee packaging, offering the industry a key tool to meet both environmental commitments and consumer expectations.
