Amcor has finalised an investment in its additive manufacturing capabilities, installing a state-of-the-art 3D printing system at its Innovation Center in Barcelona, Spain.

The move completes a global 3D printing “hub” network for the company’s Rigid Packaging Division, linking design centres across Europe, North America, and Asia.

For the food and drink market, this investment signals a shift toward “hyper-agile” development. With 3D printing now active in Barcelona, Muttenz (Switzerland), Evansville and Manchester (USA), and Shanghai (China), Amcor can now offer localised, rapid-response prototyping for brands looking to iterate pack designs in days rather than months.

In a sector where speed-to-market is the primary differentiator, the integration of 3D printing allows food and beverage producers to:

  • Bridge the CAD-to-physical gap: quickly transform digital concepts into physical models to evaluate aesthetics and ergonomics.
  • Conduct real-world testing: produce sample packs for immediate consumer research, ensuring that “pourability,” “grip,” and “frustration-free opening” meet user expectations before mass production.
  • Optimise for manufacturing: assess the feasibility of complex geometries and “light-weighted” designs that use less resin, supporting both cost-reduction and ESG targets.

The Barcelona facility joins Amcor’s network of 10 global Innovation Centers, which collectively employ approximately 1,500 R&D professionals. This network allows a food producer in the UK or EU to collaborate with a local design team while drawing on technical simulations and “virtual twin” data from Amcor’s global database.

“In today’s fast-moving markets, the ability to react quickly to changing consumer demands is fundamental,” said Alejandra Beltran, vice president R&D, Amcor Global Rigid Packaging Solutions. “We are committed to delivering the best innovations at the fastest speed, with designs that deliver a positive user experience while supporting sustainability goals.”
