Amcor, Mondini and Metsä advance fibre‑based packaging

Amcor, Mondini and Metsä have entered into a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating the adoption of recyclable fibre‑based packaging across the food industry.
By combining Metsä’s expertise in high‑quality paperboard, Mondini’s tray‑forming and sealing technology, and Amcor’s barrier‑lidding and packaging‑system capabilities, the three companies are offering food manufacturers a fully integrated alternative to traditional plastic trays.
The partnership is designed to give producers a scalable, commercially ready fibre‑based tray system that meets the performance demands of fresh and chilled food while supporting the industry’s shift toward lower‑impact packaging.
Metsä’s paperboard provides a renewable, recyclable base material, while Amcor’s lidding films are engineered for compatibility with fibre recycling streams. Mondini’s sealing technology ensures that the tray and lidding work together seamlessly, delivering the seal integrity and product protection required for categories such as meat, fish, ready meals and plant‑based foods.
For manufacturers, the collaboration removes one of the biggest barriers to adopting fibre‑based trays: the need for major equipment changes. The system is designed to run on existing Mondini tray‑sealing lines, allowing producers to transition away from rigid plastics without significant capital expenditure or operational disruption. This makes the solution particularly attractive for businesses facing tightening sustainability regulations, retailer recyclability scorecards and rising extended producer responsibility costs.
The companies emphasise that the collaboration also simplifies the supply chain. Instead of sourcing materials, machinery and lidding from separate suppliers and managing compatibility risks, manufacturers gain access to a unified system backed by three established industry leaders. This integrated approach is intended to reduce technical complexity and speed up the shift to fibre‑first packaging formats.
Beyond operational benefits, the fibre‑based trays offer strong consumer appeal. Their natural look and feel align with growing expectations around sustainability and provide brands with a premium aesthetic that stands out on shelf. As demand for recyclable packaging continues to rise, the collaboration positions fibre‑based trays as a credible mainstream option rather than a niche solution.
For the wider industry, the partnership signals a move toward system‑level innovation, where material science, machinery and packaging performance are developed together rather than in isolation. It also reflects the increasing momentum behind fibre‑based formats as food manufacturers seek packaging that delivers environmental benefits without compromising efficiency or product quality.
The collaboration between Amcor, Mondini and Metsä represents a step forward for food producers looking to reduce plastic use while maintaining the high standards required for fresh food packaging. With regulatory pressure intensifying and consumer expectations shifting, the companies believe their combined solution offers a practical, future‑ready pathway for manufacturers preparing for the next generation of sustainable packaging.
The new all-in-one packaging solution will be shown in live demonstrations at Interpack in the G. Mondini booth (Hall 5 / Booth F24). The G. Mondini Trave Streamline packaging system enables trays to pass through the sealing process with reduced friction, improving production efficiency. In addition, G. Mondini’s digital printing capabilities allow direct customisation of fibre trays, enabling strong brand differentiation while preserving a natural appearance.
