Alimentaria FoodTech highlights technological shifts in agri-food

Alimentaria FoodTech has concluded a successful three-day run at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, gathering nearly 13,000 trade professionals to examine the latest advancements shaping food and beverage processing.
The trade fair underscored rapid progress across automation, artificial intelligence, food safety, novel ingredients, and sustainable manufacturing practices across the entire agri-food value chain.
Global representation
The show floor hosted over 330 exhibiting companies from 22 countries — 26% of which were international — alongside 35 start-ups and more than 140 industry specialists.
Demonstrating strong international demand, the event brought together over 200 high-level buyers from 40+ countries, resulting in 830 pre-scheduled business meetings with exhibiting firms.
Frontier technologies on display
Innovation across processing, preservation, and monitoring took centre stage. Prominent developments on the floor included:
- Artificial vision systems: optical inspection platforms engineered to optimise line efficiency and detect microscopic contaminants or product defects.
- High cold pressure processing (HPP): non-thermal processing systems designed to significantly extend product shelf life while maintaining fresh-state quality and clean labels.
- Smart sensors & AI integration: specialised IoT sensors dedicated to curbing operational water consumption and raw product loss while feeding real-time performance data directly into client AI frameworks.
Knowledge exchange & expert insights
Alongside the commercial exhibition, the show feature program hosted 60 technical presentations led by 140 national and international experts. Agenda topics focused on integrating smart technologies into factory floors, developing functional ingredients, building sustainable production models, navigating export barriers, and elevating food safety controls.
Reflecting on the event’s impact, Ricardo Márquez, director of Alimentaria FoodTech, stated: “This edition has confirmed the technological dynamism of the food and beverage industry and its commitment to innovation to gain efficiency and competitiveness.”
Sectoral support and future outlook
The trade fair was developed in collaboration with key institutional and trade bodies, including the multisectoral association amec, ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB), the Institute for Research and Agri-Food Technologies (IRTA), and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Alimentaria FoodTech will return to Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue for its next edition, scheduled for October 8 to 10, 2029.
