Univar Solutions and Ashland forge exclusive partnership for cellulose ethers

"Ashland’s specialty ingredients are a strategic addition to our existing portfolio,” said Aaron Lee, global vice president of Health & Nutrition for Univar Solutions.
Univar Solutions has announced a major exclusive distribution agreement with Ashland Inc., a move set to bolster the supply of functional ingredients across the European, Middle Eastern, and African (EMEA) food and beverage markets.
Operating through Univar’s Foodology business unit, the partnership grants Univar exclusive rights to distribute Ashland’s extensive portfolio of cellulose ethers and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP).
The agreement, which officially commenced on January 1, 2026, focuses on meeting the surging demand for plant-based, vegan, and gluten-free applications.
The collaboration introduces a versatile array of cellulose ethers — including methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — which are critical for improving texture, stability, and mouthfeel in next-generation food products.
“Ashland’s specialty ingredients are a strategic addition to our existing portfolio,” said Aaron Lee, global vice president of Health & Nutrition for Univar Solutions. “We’re excited to broaden our cellulose ether offerings across EMEA, especially as the demand for alternative and plant-based proteins continues to accelerate. Foodology by Univar Solutions is here to help customers succeed with the support of our global distribution network.”
The partnership is being implemented in a phased rollout across the EMEA region:
- Effective Jan 1, 2026: UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Hungary.
- Effective March 1, 2026: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman.
- Effective April 1, 2026: Turkey.
Beyond distribution, the partnership leverages Univar’s global network of Solution Centers, including its flagship test kitchen in Essen, Germany. This allows manufacturers to access specialised technical expertise and formulation support to integrate Ashland’s additives into complex applications like meat analogues and gluten-free bakery.
Alessandra Faccin Assis, senior vice president and general manager at Ashland, added: “Our products offer an array of functional benefits enabling ground-breaking advancements in food and beverage innovation. This alliance will provide significant value to our customers through enhanced product availability and improved support services.”
