Hear, hear!

International Noise Awareness Day, which aims to raise awareness of noise on the welfare and health of people, took place last week on April 29th – which means my recent day out with safety company Arco was well timed.

The company was holding a Meet the Experts open day for its customers and members of the press to showcase its new products and give attendees the opportunity to speak with Arco’s expert team.

Among the products on show was Arco’s new Hearing Check Kiosk. Of course, food manufacturers are often exposed to noise levels at work which may be harmful, with noise induced hearing loss permanent and disabling – but wholly preventable.

In order to help businesses identify and prevent employee hearing loss, the company has developed the kiosk, which comprises a stand, software, touch screen tablet and headset. The hearing surveillance package allows for comprehensive hearing tests to be undertaken by employees on site.

Lasting between 10-15 minutes, the test monitors for tonal hearing loss by playing sounds at different frequencies in each ear. The results, available immediately, are illustrated by an audiogram that identifies employees’ hearing thresholds.

The kiosk is undoubtedly a convenient option for food manufacturers requiring regular hearing surveillance; the test was so simple and over in a flash, and I particularly liked that there was no waiting period for results. I’m delighted to report that I passed the test!
