Cereal boxes are being phased out in favour of plastic bags as part of a new scheme being pioneered by Sainsbury’s.

According to the supermarket giant, its decision to start selling own brand cereals in recyclable plastic bags resembling crisp packets will reduce packaging by up to a third. It has already started the transformation with its basic range of Rice Pops – now available across the country in bags.

Tesco has confirmed that it, too, is considering replacing cereal boxes with bags, as is Kellogg’s, the biggest cereal manufacturer in the world.
